About Environmental Programs at StFX

Study of the environment is one of StFX’s core teaching and research strengths. At our small, primarily undergraduate university, students have the chance to work closely with faculty who are leaders and innovators in climate and environmental issues. Students interested in an environmental degree have the option to pursue a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Arts and Science.

There are four environmental programs at StFX that examine issues facing our planet from different perspectives: Aquatic Resources, Biology (Ecology concentration), Climate & Environment, and Earth & Environmental Sciences. Whatever path you choose, you'll receive a well-rounded education with hands-on learning and research opportunities.

Aquatic Resources

In Aquatic Resources you’ll study aquatic life, climate change, policy and the complexity of human ecosystem interactions, all related to our most precious resource – water. Aquatic resources can be taken either as a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science.

Biology – Ecology Concentration

The ecology concentration is a specialization of a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. After your second year you’ll choose this concentration and focus on studying the complex interaction of living systems that form ecosystems.

Climate & Environment

In the Climate & Environment program you will study the environmental crises from a holistic perspective – from the scientific foundation of environmental problems to the social causes of and solutions to these crises. Climate & Environment is a Bachelor of Arts and Science program where students take courses both from the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Science.

Earth & Environmental Sciences

In Earth & Environmental Sciences you’ll study the interaction of rocks, water, air, energy and life that gives rise to the Earth System. After you second year you can choose the Environmental Science concentration where you’ll study environmental systems from a natural science perspective. While studying Earth & Environmental Sciences you will partake in many outdoor labs and two outdoor field schools courses.
