Hurricane season is a time for all members of the StFX community to stay alert and plan ahead for extreme weather. Below are some resources to help you and your neighbours stay safe.

Sign up for StFX Alerts

StFX Alerts is a notification service that allows registrants to opt-in to receive emergency messages via text, email (i.e. can be a different address than your StFX-issued email), and/or voice message. The system will be an addition to, and does not replace, the tools currently used to communicate to campus – use of campus-wide email, StFX social networks, local media, etc.

Enrolment is not mandatory; however, we do encourage all members of the community to register.

By registering for StFX Alerts you will receive important time-sensitive information right away by having the alert sent to your personal electronic device (cell phone, smartphone, etc.). StFX Alerts will only be sent in emergency situations.

Update: Saturday Sept 16, 12:30 pm

As post-tropical storm Lee makes landfall in the southwestern part of the province, the effects on the power grid are being felt throughout the province. In the Antigonish Town and County region many have already experienced 2 outages in the past 12 hours.

I would like to remind members of the StFX community that some buildings on campus have back up power should you need to find a place to work or charge devices in the event of an outage. In particular, Mulroney Hall has full back up power and is open until 11 pm this evening.

In addition to our academic buildings, food services remain available at:

Starbucks from 8 am through 9 pm
Morrison Hall from 11 am through 2 pm and 4:30 through 6:30 pm
Keating Café from 8 am through 4 pm

A reminder of the basics:

•    Keep all windows and doors closed tightly. Open windows during periods of strong winds have the potential to cause damage.
•    Charge your phone and other devices.
•    Stay indoors. Stay safe.
•    Stay away from damaged areas and fallen power lines.

Please monitor StFX Alerts, the StFX website, emails, social media, and local radio stations for further updates when necessary. To sign up for StFX Alerts, visit www.alerts.stfx.ca.

If you are off campus and experiencing an emergency, call 911.

Extended loss of power – what to expect

Recognizing the impact hurricanes can have on our power infrastructure, we are preparing for the scenario of a power outage.

StFX has several buildings powered by generators, including Morrison Hall for dining service. In the event of an extended loss of power, StFX will inform campus community members on locations to warm up and charge devices, the availability of food services, and other supports.

Hurricane to-do's

  • Have an emergency plan in place and create an emergency kit.

  • Stay indoors. Stay safe. Please be mindful and refrain from behaviours that put pressure on emergency services for avoidable issues. We do not want to put unnecessary stress on our first responders.

  • Please ensure that all windows are closed tightly. Open windows during periods of strong winds have the potential to cause much damage.

  • Stay away from damaged areas and fallen power lines.

  • See additional tips from the Canadian Red Cross.

Before, during and after storms, it is normal to experience stress and mental health strain. The Health and Counselling Centre offers comprehensive health services to all StFX students. If you are facing an immediate mental health crisis, call 1-888-429-8167.
