Biography

PhD (McGill University), MSc (University of Manitoba), BSc (StFX)

Jen Jamieson obtained her PhD in Human Nutrition and Dietetics at McGill University where she developed skills and expertise in population health assessment, dietary assessment, iron metabolism and epidemiological analyses. She was part of the Inuit Health Survey research team, collecting health and nutrition data from 36 Inuit communities across the Canadian Arctic, studying associations between diet, inflammation, iron status, and anemia. At StFX, her teaching and research interests focus on nutrition science, metabolism, and sport nutrition. Dr. Jamieson was a recipient of the StFX Outstanding Teaching Award in 2021 and is a strong proponent of mentoring undergraduates in research. Her current research interests include two main aims: 1) exploring access to and nutritional adequacy of restrictive diet patterns and 2) tool development in diet planning and assessment.

Research
  • Exploring access to and nutritional adequacy of restrictive diets
  • Development of diet planning and assessment tools for a food-first approach

Our team has explored access and adequacy of the gluten-free diet highlighting the higher cost and lower nutritional quality of gluten-free staple foods in Canada. We used dietary pattern analysis to identify the key food sources of nutrients, ultimately identifying a gap in gluten-free food composition data. This led us to develop an open access database to estimate missing nutrient data (particularly micronutrients of concern such as iron and folate) for commonly consumed gluten-free foods. We have also explored nutrition-related concerns of developing collegiate athletes in several projects. Currently, we are investigating food first approaches to meet post-exercise recovery goals for athletes on a plant-based diet, with the aim to develop novel dietary tools.
