Welcome to Economics at StFX!

The study of Economics provides a toolkit to understand our changing world. Rooted in a philosophical understanding of scarcity, modern economics combines data analysis, analytical intuition and mathematical modeling to improve policy and move society forward. Economists at StFX study and teach across topics that range from inflation to inequality to environmental change to crime to healthcare.   

The StFX Department of Economics is vibrant and active. Students enjoy a wide range of courses and regular opportunities to engage in research with award-winning faculty members. Our advantage is in our people: we are one of Canada’s largest economics departments among primarily-undergraduate universities. This positions us uniquely to offer the academic breath of a larger university with the more personal experience of a smaller institution.  Our faculty regularly present their research at international conferences and publish in highly-respected academic journals. Our faculty also regularly provide students with summer research opportunities, which have led to student publications in recent years. In 2024, we welcomed Anastasiia Suvorova (Ph.D. Western), who specializes in applied microeconomics, labour economics and economics of human capital accumulation. 

Economics is unique at StFX, as it intersects with Arts, Science and Business. StFX economics students can choose BBA, BA or BSc degree paths. Honours programs in all three provide students with state-of-the-art training and can be taken jointly with several other programs. Our graduates build successful careers in academia, government, finance, law, and management. They have secured positions at prestigious institutions such as the Bank of Canada and Finance Canada, reflecting their advanced preparation. Our students achieve exceptional placement rates in top graduate programs in Canada and Internationally.
