Academic X’cellence: Sharing stories from our inspiring StFX community
It should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with StFX that our campus is filled with highly engaged students, educators, researchers, and leaders. Academic X’cellence shines a spotlight on members of our educational community to find out more about their unique experiences—both inside and outside of the classroom. Here we meet Brynn Jurus of Ancaster, ON, a fourth year honours BSc in human kinetics student who is also completing a minor in health science. Brynn is the recipient of a StFX Canadian Scholarship, is a three-time Dean’s List honouree, ranked as the top student in her program last year, and is a three-time Academic All-Canadian. Brynn is also captain of the X-Women varsity soccer team. She volunteers at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital and is completing a Service Learning placement at the Antigonish Food Bank. Brynn’s goal is to go into a career in medicine, and eventually cardiothoracic surgery.

Brynn Jurus, a bright light in the classroom and on the soccer pitch, has set a goal for a career in medicine

Tell us about some highlights during your time at StFX.

Last year, I was grateful to achieve the top rank in my program, a reflection of the time and dedication I put into my studies. I developed a growing interest in research, leading me to pursue an honours degree, which I am currently in the process of completing. My commitment to my education has earned me recognition as a three-time Academic All-Canadian and a three-time Dean’s List honouree. I am also a recipient of the StFX Canadian Scholarship, which has provided invaluable support throughout my years at StFX.

Being part of the X-Women soccer team has truly shaped my experience at StFX. It has connected me with so many incredible people and given me countless unforgettable experiences that I am so grateful for. The highlight of my soccer career at StFX was going undefeated in the 2023 season and winning the conference championship. It was a testament to years of hard work, determination, and an amazing team that I was proud to be a part of. My experience as a student-athlete has also taught me invaluable lessons off the field that I will carry forward through the rest of my university career and throughout life.

What drew you to your program?

I am hoping to pursue a career in medicine, which is what initially drew me towards human kinetics and a health science minor. Sports have also been an integral part of my life, and I was interested in learning more about sport and physical activity.

Have you had a favorite class?

One of my favourite classes at StFX was Anatomy and Physiology. The professor created a fun and engaging environment, making it a class that I looked forward to and enjoyed learning about.

What’s next after graduation?

After StFX, my goal is to pursue a career in medicine and eventually cardiothoracic surgery. Becoming a doctor is something that has always interested me and is something that I have been working really hard for in school and through volunteering in the field.

What stands out from your time at StFX?

Other than being a varsity athlete, one of the best opportunities I’ve had at StFX is the ability to participate in Service Learning. In my early years at StFX, I overlooked the importance of Service Learning. However, since beginning my volunteer work at the Antigonish Food Bank, I have gained valuable insight into the needs of our community and the incredible dedication of people who selflessly work to improve others' lives. I chose to complete my Service Learning placement at the Antigonish Food Bank for the opportunity to gain new experiences and understand diverse perspectives. I have learned so much from this experience and I encourage others to do the same. I also volunteer weekly at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, which has been a very rewarding experience.

Why is it important to become involved?

Becoming involved is something that I think is important throughout all aspects of life. It not only benefits the greater community but also creates opportunities to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. My involvement within the StFX and Antigonish community has allowed me to continuously develop new skills and broaden my perspective. It is incredibly rewarding to make a positive impact on others while gaining unique experiences that you might otherwise not get the opportunity to have.

Would have advice for a first year student?

My advice to a first year student would be to find a healthy balance between academic responsibilities and creating memorable experiences. Getting involved with a sports team, club, or volunteer activity is an incredible way to meet new people and enhance your university experience. School can become very stressful for many and having that outlet to have fun and meet new people is one that made a big difference for me.
