Devaughn Blackwood: Striving for excellence in academics, athletics and community involvement

Tell us about some highlights, involvements, and accomplishments?
During my time at StFX, I’ve had the privilege of being involved in a variety of meaningful experiences that have helped shape my growth both academically and athletically. As a member of the StFX varsity football team, I contributed to three conference championships, while maintaining a strong academic performance, being recognized as a four-time Academic All-Canadian as well as a four-time standing on the Dean’s List. I believe this proves that although you commit plenty of hours to excelling in your sport, maintaining balance is possible and I look to thrive in each environment.

I was honoured to receive the Chadwick-Hayes Entrance Scholarship for my undergraduate degree and then, in 2022, I was honoured with the Athletes on Track National Bursary. These bursaries help support my educational and athletic goals. I was also awarded the A.P. Beaton bursary for academic excellence in my fourth year of study. A standout experience for me was stepping outside my comfort zone to pursue academic research in my minor of sports marketing, focusing on fan engagement. I was awarded a SSHRC USRA to conduct this research during the summer, further solidifying my passion for the field while pursuing research in a relevant field. Looking ahead, I’m also excited to continue my academic research in economics this upcoming summer.

My leadership and commitment to service have also been important aspects of my journey. I’ve been recognized for my leadership qualities, receiving the Elite Leaders Certificate and completing a 360 Leadership Evaluation through the StFX Student-Athlete Leadership Program. Additionally, I obtained my Service Learning Certificate for volunteer work, and I participated on an Immersion Service Learning trip to Guatemala, where I worked to make a positive impact in local communities.

In terms of community involvement, I’ve served as the Director of Finance for the Sports Management Society, a role I’m proud to hold after helping to pioneer and relaunch the organization. I’m also involved in initiatives such as the student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) where I serve as an advocate for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. I have volunteered within local schools, devoting my time to peer mentor youth—an effort I’ll continue through Dr. Jonathan Hood’s "Ahead of the Game" program. I was honoured to be nominated for the Student-Athlete Volunteer Award at the Athletics Banquet last year. Finally, during this past X-Ring ceremony, I had the privilege of thanking guest speaker John Caplice for all of his efforts.

What drew you to study business?
Fortunately, my high school offered many business classes. This foundation, along with great teachers, guided me in the direction of business at a young age. It combined my love for numbers and problem solving, and I knew that accounting would be my preferred stream.

Have you had a favorite class?
My favourite class at StFX would have to be financial accounting theory with Dr. Mary Oxner. It was a truly engaging environment where I felt like I was putting my knowledge of accounting into real world principles. It was a smaller class that allowed for great discussions and coverage of enticing topics. I think my biggest takeaway, however, was how applicable it was to business we see everyday and the effects on things such as the stock market.

Do you feel your student research experience impacted your studies?
I believe my student research experience at StFX impacted my time here in three key ways. First, as previously mentioned, it pushed me outside my comfort zone since it was something I had never done before. Although challenging, the experience served as a valuable learning curve and proved that with effort, even the unfamiliar can be achieved. Second, the research experience equipped me with important academic tools, such as the ability to analyze and unpack peer-reviewed articles and apply them to my studies. These skills not only enhanced my learning but also deepened my appreciation for the value of academically-backed research. Finally, the topic of my research had a direct connection to my minor in sports management. Gaining a deeper understanding of the subject matter allowed me to engage more fully in my coursework, taking a step ahead as a student and enabling me to contribute meaningfully to class discussions and projects.

Do you have a path in mind for after StFX?
While my direct path after StFX is still unfolding, I do have some personal goals that will guide my journey post-graduation. My first and foremost goal is to play football at the highest level in the CFL. I’ve dedicated much of my life to the sport, and I’m eager to pursue the opportunity to make that dream a reality. However, I recognize that football has a finite timeline, and should that chapter come to an end, I take great pride in my academic pursuits. With that in mind, I plan to pursue my CPA and focus on accounting, with the long-term goal of eventually working for myself. I’ve always had a passion for travel, and ideally, I would love to use my accounting expertise to work with businesses internationally, blending my professional ambitions with my desire to explore the world.

Is there an opportunity that stands out for you?
The opportunity that stands out most to me at StFX was the chance to play on the varsity football team. In high school, many players are recruited to play at the collegiate level, but I wasn’t one of them. I had to take the initiative by reaching out to coaches and sending countless emails until StFX finally responded. They gave me the opportunity to try out and walk on to the team, an opportunity that ultimately changed my life. Playing varsity football has opened countless doors for me, not just as an athlete, but also as a student. I’ve built memories, forged lasting friendships, and made valuable connections that will stay with me for a lifetime. The experience has taught me the importance of balance, determination, and the belief that hard work will eventually be rewarded. I truly believe that my commitment to becoming a better student-athlete shaped my time at StFX, and it’s an opportunity that enabled me to accomplish everything I have over the past five years.

Would you have advice for a first year student?
My biggest advice for a first-year student would be two things: Get involved and stay true to yourself. The first year can be a tough adjustment, but the reality is, almost 99 per cent of students are feeling the same way. The best way to overcome this and truly thrive is by getting involved in activities that you love. Whether it’s intramural sports, clubs, societies, or even weekend getaways, I genuinely believe finding these hobbies will lead to a happier and healthier university experience. That said, the most important piece of advice I can offer is to always stay true to yourself. Even if you're still figuring out who you are and what you want to become, remember that everyone has a unique core, and that should always shine through. There will be people who appreciate you for it, and others who won’t, but that doesn’t matter. In the end, you’ll find yourself surrounded by people who love you for who you truly are, and that’s an incredible feeling. Everyone is on their own path, and the real winners are those who can be present and appreciate the moment. Time flies, and you don’t want to waste any of it.
