The Father Ginivan Award

Epoch picture of Father Ginivan

Christopher van Bommel is this year’s winner of the Father Ginivan Award for Excellence in Mathematics, awarded each year by the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science to the department’s most outstanding second-year student.

Father Francis Ginivan was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame who came to StFX in the 1940s, and served as chair of the Math Department during the period of expansion in the 1960s. He was responsible for hiring many of the senior professors in the department today, and his love of mathematics and mathematics teaching, and the enthusiasm which he brought to the subject, still permeates the department. The Father Ginivan Award was established in 1987.
