Undergraduate Research

The Computer Science Department awards undergraduate student internships for students who will collaborate with faculty to conduct research throughout the summer. Students returning to full time studies in the fall term, and first year PBDAI students are eligible to apply. Normally, at least four awards will be granted.

Irving Oil Research Mentorship awards offer StFX undergraduate students the opportunity to be involved in the creation of new knowledge and creative use of existing knowledge through original research carried out under the supervision of a faculty mentor. Funding to support student researchers is provided through the McKenna Centre for Leadership with an endowment established by Irving Oil. Normally a minimum of eight undergraduate student Summer Research Internships are awarded each year for students enrolled in Bachelor programs at StFX. The Internships support full-time employment for students to carry out their own research projects under the supervision and mentorship of full time faculty members

Applications must fit with one of the five RNS health research priorities: health innovation; mental health; continuing care; accessible health services; well-being of Nova Scotians. Applicants must also be registered in an honours stream or advanced major undergraduate degree program and have completed at least two (2) years of an undergraduate degree; have achieved a first-class average in the current undergraduate degree program; and be in good standing for continued enrolment in an honours stream or advanced major undergraduate degree program. Scotia Scholars Awards (undergraduate)

The Gerald Schwartz School of Business Research Internship Awards provide funding for StFX BBA students to carry out a business-related research project under the supervision of a full time faculty member. Students in the StFX BBA program are eligible to apply for the award. Students must be full-time at the time of application and be returning to full-time studies in the StFX BBA program in the fall. Students must propose research that aligns with a business area, such as:

• Accounting
• Enterprise Systems
• Entrepreneurship
• Finance
• International Business
• Management and Leadership
• Marketing

 The project does not have to be connected to a supervisor’s own research program.

The RBC Foundation Undergraduate Summer Research Internship Award program gives StFX students the opportunity to be involved in the creation of new knowledge and the creative use of existing knowledge through original research carried out under the supervision of a faculty supervisor/mentor. Students will build on the knowledge they have acquired in their courses and will have the opportunity to develop and apply new analytical skills. Perhaps most importantly, through this program, students have the opportunity to participate in the community of researchers that share their interests. Many StFX students have, while still enrolled in Bachelor programs, presented papers at learned conferences, been authors on articles published in international journals, and/or contributed to knowledge mobilization through local, regional, national or international collaborations. Funding to support student researchers in summer research internships through the Mulroney Institute of Government comes from the RBC Foundation. Student applications from across all disciplines and faculties of the University are welcome.

Awards supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) are awarded to outstanding students undertaking research in natural, physical or engineering sciences. To be eligible to apply for an award, a student must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada; be registered in a bachelor's degree program; and have obtained, over the previous years of study, a cumulative average of at least second class (a grade of "B" or "B-," if applicable) as defined by the university.

To hold an award, the student must have completed all the course requirements of at least the first year of university study (or two academic terms) of the bachelor's degree; have been registered in at least one of the two terms immediately before holding the award in a bachelor's degree program; not have started a program of graduate studies in the natural sciences or engineering at any time; and be engaged on a full-time basis in research and development activities in the natural sciences or engineering during the tenure of the award.

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) each provide one award to outstanding Black Canadian students (citizens or permanent residents of Canada, only), in the social sciences, arts and humanities, and in health disciplines, respectively. All other eligibility criteria noted above apply also.

Each year, the University Council for Research (UCR) provides funding for several undergraduate student research awards across all disciplines. Undergraduate students carry out their own research projects under the supervision and mentorship of full time faculty members.
