Here we meet Erica Cameron, of Newmarket, ON, a student in her third year of a five-year double degree. She is taking a BBA honours in entrepreneurship and a BSc in human nutrition. Erica is a recipient of the prestigious $80,000 Schwartz National Scholar Award. She is also a leader in the Schwartz Women in Business Society and is part of a diverse team who this year founded Impact X – A Summit on Social Entrepreneurship and Change. Erica also participated in an Immersion Service Learning experience to Belize and is the recipient of an Alumni Recognition Award.
Erica Cameron: “With a business degree in entrepreneurship and a science degree in human nutrition, I aim to make a significant impact in the health and wellness sector, looking to advocate for those whose voices often go unheard.”
What drew you a double degree?
In high school, I became passionate about both business and health science. I had a hard time figuring out which path to choose in university. In doing my post-secondary research, I discovered that StFX offered a unique five-year, two-degree option for students to study business and science. This program was unlike anything any other university across Canada offered and it was an exciting opportunity for me as I no longer had to choose between two options - I could do both!
Tell us about some highlights at StFX.
I have only been at StFX for three years and I have been so lucky to have had so many highlights. I was awarded the prestigious and generous Schwartz National Scholar Award, which is valued at $80,000. This was instrumental in deciding where I wanted to attend school. I truly owe my education and the opportunity to attend StFX to this incredible scholarship. I’ve been actively involved in the Schwartz Women in Business (WiB) Society since my first year. I started as a general member and have since served as the community relations director in second year, and the conference director this year. Being part of WiB has been an amazing experience and something I am so proud to be a part of. It has allowed me to learn from and work alongside strong, inspiring women from different years and programs. We've created opportunities for empowerment, growth, and connection through events like our annual conference, speaker series, general events, and the Make Your Mark Fund. I've also had the chance to network with incredible women from outside the university who support our society.
Within the Schwartz School of Business, I have also been able to facilitate and run pitch events, specifically tailored for first-year students. In these events, students work collaboratively in groups to develop and present innovative solutions based on a provided case study, honing their skills and confidence in the process. Supporting students in their StFX journey is another highlight.
Over the past few months, I've also had the privilege to work alongside a remarkable and diverse team to co-found a new opportunity for students: Impact X—a Summit on Social Entrepreneurship and Change. Together, we’ve designed an extraordinary opportunity for both aspiring and seasoned entrepreneurs to explore, innovate, and create meaningful impact. I am immensely proud to be part of this unique event.
I also had the incredible opportunity to go to Belize this past April with the Immersion Service Learning Program. Over our almost two week trip, I not only offered support to the local community, but I also gained invaluable insights into the lives of many individuals in a small Mayan community, the Maya Center. The kindness of our guides and hosts, getting to meet and play with young children at the local school, and being able to take in the beautiful culture and sights of Belize made this an experience of a lifetime that I will never forget.
Most recently, I was awarded the Alumni Recognition Award and was able to share an abbreviated version of the essay I wrote for the award at the 2024 Homecoming Alumni Awards Ceremony. This award really allowed me to share my love and gratitude for StFX.
What was that like?
At the ceremony, it was really empowering to be surrounded by so many gracious and amazing alumni who have given their time and talent back to X. It further fueled my desire to give back to this school as a current student and in the future as an alum.
Why is it important to get involved?
Getting involved in school life holds different significance for everyone, but for me, it’s been a transformative experience. During high school, I was highly engaged in various activities - from music to sports to clubs and committees - and it brought me immense happiness and a sense of purpose. When I started university, my initial plan was to take a step back to focus on my academics and adjust to this new environment. But as my first year unfolded, I quickly realized how much I missed being actively involved. By the time my second year came around, I was ready to jump back in. Embarking on this journey not only allowed me to reconnect with my passion for extracurricular activities, but it also opened opportunities to meet new people, give back to the community, and keep my life vibrant and busy. For me, it has been a source of joy, passion, and truly fulfills me and my time at StFX has been enriched because I have chosen to be involved.
Do you feel it helps inform your education?
My experiences and involvement at StFX have definitely enriched my education. While many students across Canada and the world have access to post-secondary education, what truly sets our degrees apart is how we choose to engage during our time here. Immersing myself in extracurricular activities has not only cultivated essential skills like teamwork, leadership, and time management, but it has also armed me with valuable lessons that extend beyond the classroom and will serve me well after graduation.
Have you had a favorite class?
I have been fortunate to have had great professors who are passionate about their subject matter. This passion translates into a more engaging learning environment for students. Looking back, I particularly enjoyed my ‘Introduction to Business’ class in my first year as it introduced me to the foundations of business and served to integrate me into the Schwartz School of Business. On the science side, I really enjoyed ‘Microbiology,’ especially the labs. The hands-on work got me really excited about the upcoming science classes I was going to take, and the content was very interesting!
Do you have a path in mind for after StFX?
I remain open to a variety of opportunities after university, and I feel confident that my experiences at StFX will equip me for whatever comes next. Each course I take, along with the diverse individuals I meet, and the knowledge I gain beyond the classroom, helps me to reflect on my future. I know I want to support future StFX graduates, especially young female entrepreneurs. With a business degree in entrepreneurship and a science degree in human nutrition, I aim to make a significant impact in the health and wellness sector, looking to advocate for those whose voices often go unheard. I am also eager to travel to deepen my understanding of the world.
Is there an opportunity at StFX that stands out?
Although there have been many standout opportunities, one of the most significant was attending my first Schwartz Women in Business Conference in my first year. That experience opened my eyes to a society I could see myself being a part of in future years. Looking back, it has become one of my favorite aspects of my time at StFX. Through WiB, I’ve made lasting friendships and connections, grown both personally and professionally, gained confidence through my executive roles, and found a place where I truly belong. WiB has empowered me, thanks to the incredible women in the society and the support from our broader community.
Any advice for a first year student?
The advice I would share is the same advice that I have given to my younger brother, who is now in his first year at StFX. First of all, it is a BIG adjustment! It can be difficult to live away from home and be confronted with so much change all at once. So, be patient with yourself know that you are not alone in how you are feeling. Be brave and put yourself out there to get involved and try something new. StFX has so many societies, clubs, and activities on the go—take advantage of them! Time flies, and you’ll want to make the most of it. Also, build relationships with your professors. They’re brilliant and supportive, and getting to know them has been one of the most rewarding parts of my university experience.
