Going the X-tra Mile: Alumni come together to reunite lost X-Ring with owner

Becky displays her lost-and-found X-Ring on her hand in front of a Christmas tree

The new year began with a flurry of excitement for StFX Alumni Affairs, the Xaverian community, and an alumna who received a welcome surprise in the early days of 2025.

On the evening of January 2nd, a member of the Ask Antigonish Facebook group posted that she had seen an X-Ring for sale at Value Village in Dartmouth, NS. The information was flagged to members of the StFX Alumni Office who wasted no time getting to work to find its owner.

The gold Class of 2001 ring had a difficult-to-read inscription that posed an identification challenge. Calls were made to several alumni to help narrow down the search, alumni commented on the post and offered tips, and the 2001 StFX yearbook was pored over for clues.

By mid-morning on January 3rd, the team's efforts led to a breakthrough, revealing Becky (Carruthers) Savoie as the X-Ring's owner! Overwhelmed with joy to hear the news, Ms. Savoie explained that the X-Ring had been missing for seven years and had probably made its way to Value Village in a bag of donated clothing items.

At the same time, StFX’s Vice President of Advancement, David Graham, who was in Dartmouth on the morning of January 3rd, showed up at Value Village to approach the store’s manager about securing the ring. He explained that it was a lost item and they agreed to release it.

Mr. Graham hand-delivered the ring to Ms. Savoie, who lives in Dartmouth, closing the loop on a mystery that energized Xaverians as they emerged from the holidays. The collective problem solving that resulted in the quick identification of the ring’s owner is an example of how much Xaverians care and look out for each other – indeed, going the X-tra mile!
