Addressing Barriers: Time 

Short on time? Check out some of these outdoor opportunities!

  • The Stfx walking trails are located behind Riley and O’Regan Hall. They are close by for anyone on campus. Try walking the trails for a break between classes. 
  • The seating area outside of Mulroney, the Coady Gardens, Memorial Field, the MSB courtyard, the Alumni gardens, Alumni Plaza, and the Inn patio are all on-campus options for being outside that can be enjoyed for as much time as desired.
  • The Antigonish Landing is located at the end of Main Street and is within walking distance of campus and nearby areas.
  • There are two new accessible picnic tables outside of Mulroney Hall on the side facing the Annex building.

Are you willing to take some more time out of your day to immerse yourself in nature? Try one of these options:

  • Antigonish Golf and Country Club is a 5-minute drive from campus (walkable).
  • Beaver Mountain is a 13-minute drive from campus.
  • Keppoch Mountain is a 19-minute drive from campus.
  • Cameron’s Lake (affiliated with Keppoch) is a 16-minute drive from campus. 
  • Arisaig Provincial Park is a 23-minute drive from campus.
  • Browns Mountain is a 23-minute drive from campus. 
  • Pomquet Beach is a 24-minute drive from campus.
  • The Cape George lighthouse is a 34-minute drive from campus.
  • The Chedabucto Lifestyle Complex is a 50-minute drive from campus. 
Addressing Barriers: Transportation

Antigonish has a transit service available for use.  The Antigonish Community Transit Society offers fixed route bus service or a door-to-door service (book-a-ride service). The book-a-ride service requires booking a minimum of one day in advance (bookings must be made by 1 p.m. at least one day before you wish to ride). 

For information on travel routes, and fees, you can check out the website for Antigonish Community Transit. You can also contact the office directly at 902-867-0411. The ACTS requests that clients identify the need for an accessible vehicle at the time of booking.

Trips within Antigonish town limits – $3 
Trips up to 5 km – $5 
Trips from 5km to 15km – $8 
Trips over 15km – $8 for the first 15km then .75¢ for each additional km 

Addressing Barriers: Equipment

The Town of Antigonish offers equipment rentals for various activities

Antigonish County Recreation (ACR) also offers an equipment loan program, and has lots of options for accessible equipment (e.g., Mobi Chair, Hippocampe, Adaptive Canoe equipment, Snow Coach, Sledge).

Keppoch Mountain also offers equipment rentals (cross country skis, snowshoes, bikes).  

Addressing Barriers: Money

These are some great outdoor options that can be accessed with minimal costs:

  1. Cape George

Perfect for students who enjoy hiking. Check out some of the many trails including:

  • 7 looped trials covering a distance of 2-12 km
  • 5 point-to-point trials covering distances ranging from 7-21 km
  • Several walking bridges that cross brooks and streams for a more casual stroll
  • 29 km of coastal trials for a more intense hike
  • 6 km of river valleys
  • A 3 km walk along the shore line
  1. Beaver Mountain Provincial Park

Here, students can participate in a variety of nature-based activity including:

  • A 6 km walking trail
  • Challenging uphill hikes
  • Winter activities such as cross country skiing and snow-shoeing
  • Wildlife observation

** Please note that if students wish to participate in cross country skiing and snow-shoeing, they need to have equipment (see ‘Equipment’ page for loan and rental options in the area).

  1. Chedabucto Lifestyle Complex

The Shinny Rink can be used for hockey, ball hockey, basketball and other outdoor activities, and the skating loop which can be used for ice skating, rollerblading, walking. The facility with ice can be rented for $75, or drop in prices range from $5-$10 at specific times.
