About
The St. Francis Xavier University Archives is institutional and private. The University Archives is the central repository for the collecting, arranging, describing, and preserving of material that documents the history of St. Francis Xavier University and its chancellor, faculty, staff, and alumni (Mandate & Policies). The University Archives is also the campus department that directs the University records management program.
The University Archives is primarily a "university archives" housing the collections of the major administrative offices; i.e. President, Vice presidents, Deans, Registrar, University Advancement, the Coady International Institute, the Extension Department, Business Office, as well as other offices. The Archives also holds a variety of personal papers of former faculty/staff and alumni. Those which deserve mention are the personal papers of The Rev. Dr. Moses M. Coady (first director of the Extension Department; 1929-1952), the papers of Mr. Justice J. Keiller MacKay (former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario), and of The Honourable Alexander Johnston (former member of parliament and deputy minister of fisheries).
Varying degrees of restrictions are placed upon personal and corporate papers. There is generally a 25-year restriction on corporate records with longer time restraints imposed upon faculty/staff and student records (Mandate & Policies).
The Archives collects any material, regardless of medium, which records the history of St. Francis Xavier University. The collection measures approximately 2000 linear feet of records and also has approximately 10,000 photographs and slides, 700 reel-to-reels and cassettes, numerous film and video tapes, drawings, maps, and plans, artifacts, and university publications such as the calendars, student directories, yearbooks, student newspaper, alumni magazine, and other publications created and distributed by various university departments.
